Sustainability and stewardship
Sustainability and stewardship form an integral part of our investment approach. They help us better understand long-term risks, opportunities and resilience across the companies in which we invest.
Integration into the Investment Process
Our multi-asset portfolios are built around a core of direct global equities, reflecting our belief that quality companies provide the best opportunities for long-term capital growth and sustainable income.
We invest in businesses with strong track records, sustainable returns and attractive growth prospects. We believe long-term success depends on effectively managing environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and supporting a more resilient and sustainable economy.
As investor expectations and regulatory standards evolve, companies aligned with sustainable trends are increasingly well positioned for future growth, while those that fail to adapt may face higher costs and greater business risks. ESG considerations are therefore integrated across our investment process, helping us identify long-term opportunities and avoid companies exposed to material risks and vulnerabilities.
Our Five-Point Sustainability Framework
The five pillars that underpin our analysis are influenced by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They capture the major themes we believe are most important to identify companies best placed to benefit from the transition towards a cleaner and more resilient path of economic growth.
For each of the five pillars below, our analysts assess the materiality of the risks to the investment case (high, medium, low). The analysts then evaluate the company’s approach to managing these issues against a set of underlying criteria, assigning a rating of positive (+), neutral (=) or negative (-).
The five pillars are:
- Decarbonisation and climate change risks
- Transition to a circular economy
- Protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems
- Equitable, healthy and safe society
- Strong governance and accountability
Stewardship
We are active stewards of our clients’ capital, using engagement and voting to support good governance, responsible business practices and long-term value creation.
We engage constructively with companies and fund managers to better understand risks and opportunities, encourage positive change and protect our clients’ interests. As our resources are focused where they can have the greatest impact, engagement is prioritised where issues are most material to our investment case.
Through targeted engagement and voting, we seek to support sustainable long-term outcomes for investors and wider stakeholders.
