William van Straubenzee
Over 30 years’ experience in investment management. Joined us in 2009.
Willie has been with us from the start in 2009 – attracted by the opportunity to start a new wealth management business with a blank page, but a great name.
He was instrumental in setting up the investment process that has delivered such strong investment performance.
“Willie was my first choice in establishing the way we manage money and hence one of the first people I brought in at the launch of James Hambro & Partners,” says CEO Andy Steel.
“He is someone who has the ability to put a genuinely fit-for-purpose investment process together and the conviction to put it into action. A lot of people talk a good game but lack the courage of their conviction. Not Willie. He brings real passion to the business. He’s also a pain in the backside. But that’s what we employ him for. He’s the one who asks the questions no-one else thinks or dares to ask. He’s been fundamental to our success.”
Willie was a Trustee of St Dunstans (now Blind Veterans UK) for 20 years and subsequently the Special Boat Services Association.
After graduating from Oxford, where he studied, as he says, “occasionally”, Willie started his career as a shipping broker. He’ll happily admit that he was terrible at it. Then, in the 80s, he was approached by a university friend at Morgan Grenfell and joined as a mature graduate trainee, where he worked alongside several talented individuals that constitute many of the great and good of today’s investment world, including M&G’s Mike McLintock, Artemis’s Adrian Frost and Egerton’s John Armitage; they still all remain good friends.
